Fatima Hassouna died with nine members of her family in a direct strike on their home in Gaza City on Wednesday.
Hassouna, who had gained international recognition for her photojournalism capturing the impact on the Gaza Strip’s civilian population of the Israeli military campaign, appears in French-Iranian director Sepideh Farsi’s Put Your Soul On Your Hand And Walk.
Hassouna was killed 24 hours after the documentary was announced as having been selected for parallel Cannes section ACID, running from May 14 to 23 alongside the main festival.
The work revolves around video conversations between Farsi, whose credits include Berlinale-selected animated feature The Siren, and Hassouna. They began when the director connected with the young woman while researching a wider documentary on the events unfolding in Gaza.
“She was such a light, so talented. When you see the film you’ll understand,” Farsi told Deadline. “I had talked to her a few hours before to tell her that the film was in Cannes and to invite her.”
Farsi recounts that Hassouna was open to the idea of attending the screening, as long as she could return to Gaza afterwards.
“She said, ‘I’ll come, but I have to go back to Gaza. I don’t want to leave Gaza,” said Farsi. “I was already in touch with the French Embassy. We’d just started the process. I was worried about how to get her out and back in safely. I didn’t want to have the responsibility of separating her from her family.”
“Now the whole family is dead. I’m trying to find out if her parents are dead but for sure Fatima and her sisters and brothers are dead. One of the sisters was pregnant. On a video call two days ago, she showed me her belly. It’s so horrible and devastating. Fatima herself had gotten engaged a few months ago.”

Several thousand civilians have been killed and injured in these attacks, among them doctors, nurses, medics, and ambulance drivers. Israel’s widespread destruction of medical infrastructure in Gaza is not new and has been an integral part of the warfare strategies it deploys against Palestinians.[3] During the 2008–9 attack on Gaza, the Israeli military damaged or destroyed 58 hospitals and clinics, in addition to 29 ambulances, while also killing 16 medical workers and injuring 25 more.[4] In the 2012 campaign, the destruction was more restricted, with 16 hospitals and clinics, as well as 6 ambulances, damaged or destroyed, and three medical workers injured. Two years later, however, 73 hospitals and clinics and 45 ambulances were damaged or destroyed, and 23 medical workers killed, with an additional 76 injured.[5] In its 2014 military campaign, the Israeli military also used “double-tap” and “multiple consecutive strikes” on a single location, which led to an increase in civilian casualties as well as to the killing and injuring of first responders.[6] Then, in May 2021, Israeli airstrikes damaged 33 healthcare centers, including Gaza’s main COVID-19 laboratory, and at least two prominent doctors were killed.[7] Ultimately, between December 2008 and May 2021, Israel carried out 180 strikes against hospitals, medical clinics and ambulances in the Gaza Strip. These attacks took place while hundreds, and at times thousands, of injured Palestinians sought either urgent medical treatment at hospitals and clinics or refuge in their buildings. During the five cycles of eruptive violence from 2008 until 2023, the Israeli military dealt devastating blows to the Palestinian healthcare services already severely weakened by various forms of structural violence going back decades.
Hospitals are protected under the laws of armed conflict (LOAC), with Article 12 of Additional Protocol I — the most robust treaty regulating the deployment of violence during armed conflict — stating that “Medical units shall be respected and protected at all times and shall not be the object of attack.”[8]

15.3 Historicide
Ziofascist Israel and Judeo-Nazis also kill or erase history in two complementary ways: 1a) They (try to) kill the history of Palestinians and of Palestinians belonging to Palestine and 1b) they (try to) falsely pretend that they do not belong to Palestine or, for that matter, that Palestinians (‘Arabs’) Palestine (‘Judea and Samaria’) supposedly do not even exist.
At the same time, 2a) the Ziofascists also (try to) kill the history of themselves not belonging to Palestine and 2b) they (try to) replace it a fake and fabricated history whereby they do — for instance by renaming themselves from a Polish “Mileikowski” to “Netanyahu.”

15.4 Culturicide
Just as with historicide, Ziofascist Israel and Judeo-Nazis also kill or erase Palestinian culture in two complementary ways: 1) They (try to) kill the culture of Palestinians and at the same time 2) they (try to) appropriate it and pretend it is their own.
In the weeks since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip have killed more than 15,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and destroyed thousands of homes in the territory.
And there have also been tremendous losses to the region’s ancient and globally significant cultural heritage. The region was a hub for commerce and culture under Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule. It remained influential for centuries thereafter.
A recent survey by the group Heritage for Peace details the damage done so far to more than 100 of these landmarks in Gaza since the start of the present conflict.
The casualties include the Great Omari Mosque, one of the most important and ancient mosques in historical Palestine; the Church of Saint Porphyrius, thought to be the third oldest church in the entire world; a 2,000-year-old Roman cemetery in northern Gaza excavated only last year; and the Rafah Museum, a space in southern Gaza which was dedicated to teaching about the territory’s long and multi-layered heritage — until it was hammered by airstrikes early on in the conflict.

15.6 Sophicide, including Scholasticide
Sophicide refers to the Zionist regime’s deliberate annihilation of Indigenous knowledge traditions inspired by the land itself, as well as the carriers of that knowledge, including elders and women. It involves the crushing of Palestinian life and learning through the systematic murder of Palestinian students, mentors, teachers, researchers, scholars, academics, writers, librarians, archivists, spiritual leaders, historiographers, creatives, poets, interns, lecturers, professors, staff, and lab technicians. Such attacks on these Indigenous knowledge carriers impacts entire generations of learners, crushing their aspirations and dreams.
Sophicide also includes scholasticide, a Palestinian concept that refers to the physical destruction of centers of knowledge, educational resources, infrastructures, and archives as well as the silencing, censorship, and repression of Palestinian history, epistemology, scholarship, and subjectivity. The Zionist regime’s academic repression has extended beyond Palestine and into U.S. and Canadian education centers across Turtle Island, reflecting a systemic failure by university administrators and other authorities to protect students, educators, and staff in their communities and the pursuit of knowledge free from harm.

15.8 Ecocide
Just like other white racist genocidal terrorist settler-colonizer trash, Ziofascist Israel and its Judeo-Nazis also have been committing ecocide or the destruction of ecosystems and the environment on a massive scale and in order to drive the native Palestinians out of Palestine.
Ecocide (from Greek oikos “home” and Latin cadere “to kill”) is the destruction of the environment by humans.[1] Ecocide threatens all human populations who are dependent on natural resources for maintaining ecosystems and ensuring their ability to support future generations.[2][3][4][5] The Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide describes it as “unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts”.[6][7]

Today, Israel covertly transports waste products from its own country into dumps and quarries throughout the occupied West Bank, polluting the Palestinian earth and water supply, while Israeli settlers in the West Bank — who produce similar amounts of wastewater to the Palestinian population, despite being outnumbered more than six to one — deliberately poison the water, land and livestock of nearby Palestinian villages. Solid wastes from Israeli settlements and military camps throughout the West Bank are dumped without restriction on Palestinian land, fields and side roads, and industry regularly moves from Israel to the West Bank, where labour is cheaper, environmental regulations are lenient and waste products, generated from the production of aluminium, leather tanning, textile dyeing, batteries, fiberglass, plastics and other chemicals, can flow freely down to Palestinian villages in surrounding valleys.
At least seven industrial zones, and at least 200 factories, have either moved from Israel into the West Bank, or have been constructed by the Israel government, inside the West Bank, a blatant violation of international law.
After one such factory, Geshuri Industries, moved its pesticide, insecticide and fertilizer production from Israel, where it was declared a health hazard, into the West Bank in 1982, the owner began the courteous practice of closing the factory for the one month every year that a change in wind direction would blow its pollutants toward Israel.
The construction, beginning in 2002, of Israel’s mammoth separation/apartheid wall, while separating Palestinian farmers from their fields, has destroyed Palestinian legally owned fertile agricultural land, and has brought with it all the extensive contamination of natural habitats associated with the use of heavy machinery and millions of tons of concrete. The wall has isolated Palestinian communities from vital water sources, and has interfered with natural drainage systems in the West Bank, causing flooding and substantial environmental and agricultural damage in times of high rainfall.
15.9 Legicide
The US-led and so-called “rules-based order” is a euphemism and propaganda term for “Washington consensus” or “dictates.” Its purpose is to undermine and destroy international law — a form of legicide — while at the same time trying to give the false appearance of upholding international law.
Ziofascist Israel’s genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians are all strictly against international (humanitarian) law. But since the UN, ICC and ICJ are useless institutions that are unable to stop that terrorist state and its worst possible crimes as well as due to the Axis of Genocide’s attacks against international law, resultant legicide is also part and parcel of Ziofascist Israel’s omnicide.
Instead, we get pseudo-laws such as Israel’s supposed but nonexistent ‘right to exist’:

15.10 Suicide
An unintended side effect of Ziofascist Israel’s genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians and neighboring countries such as Lebanon is the massive antagonization of people around the globe against that terrorist state, its insane Zionist ideology and its about equally insane population which suffers from the same ‘chosen people’ delusions and psychosis as Nazi Germans did back under Adolf Hitler:
This is why, as a part of Ziofascist Israel’s omnicide, one can also add the slow but increasingly inevitable suicide of that insane and evil terrorist state and nation. The ratio here is that the more Palestinians and the more of Palestine Israel robs and destroys and the more evil and insane acts Israel commits, the bigger and more inescapable the grave becomes which Israel is digging for itself.
This brings up yet another clear similarity between Nazi Germany and Zionazi Israel, because just like Adolf Hitler was the major suicidal destroyer of Nazi Germany from within, Benjamin Netanyahu may easily turn out to be the major suicidal destroyer of Zionazi Israel from within too. An October 25, 2023 Haaretz article accordingly stated that “Netanyahu […] will be remembered as the major destroyer of the Jewish nation from within”:
Conclusion: The End of Zionism, Israel and Western Ideology
As made clear by the 1948 Nakba, Zionist Israel has always been a racist genocidal terrorist settler-colonist insane and evil entity, and in order to end that insanity and evil — and similarly to what was done with Nazism and Nazi Germany — , Zionism and Israel will have to end. That is also the case since, the longer Zionism and Israel are permitted to exist, the more damage they will do and the bigger the price that will need to be paid for the continued existence of that insanity and evil.

There’s no chance for a one-state solution, there’s no chance for any solution. Also the two-state solution is not a solution as long as Israel is a Zionist state.”
