An unlawful Israeli strike on a family in a car on November 5, 2023, should be investigated as an apparent war crime, Human Rights Watch said today. The attack killed three girls and their grandmother and wounded their mother.
The family had been traveling from south Lebanon to Beirut in the late afternoon, following heavy shelling by Israeli forces in the area earlier that day, Samir Ayoub, the girls’ uncle, said in a televised interview the night of the attack. Ayoub, a journalist, was traveling in a separate car in front of the car that was hit.
“This attack by Israeli military forces that struck a car carrying a family fleeing violence shows a reckless disregard for civilian life,” said Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Three young girls and their grandmother have lost their lives, our investigations show, as a result of the Israeli military’s failure to distinguish between combatants and civilians. Their killing is a violation of the laws of war, and Israel’s allies, like the US, should respond to this apparent war crime by demanding accountability for this unlawful strike.”
That evening, the Israeli military admitted carrying out the strike, telling the Times of Israel it “struck a vehicle in Lebanese territory that was identified as a suspicious vehicle containing several terrorists […] The claim that there were several uninvolved civilians in the vehicle is being examined. The event is under review.” According to Human Rights Watch research, they have provided no further evidence to justify their claim.

Israel has heavily shelled territory across the Lebanese-Israeli border, including with white phosphorus, a chemical munition which produces fires and smoke that is toxic to plants and animals.
Uday Abu Sari, a farmer in the border town of Dahayrah, said that the entirety of his crops will have to be thrown out this year, as his land was directly hit by the chemical.
“Look at this cabbage, it’s unusable … How can I sell these crops? If someone knows they come from here, they of course won’t want them,” Abu Sari told The New Arab on Sunday, showing discolored lettuce and cabbage which were exposed to white phosphorus.
Abu Sari’s farm also sustained damage to the irrigation network, producing a total loss of $5,000 this season — a crippling amount for the small-scale farmer. White Phosphorus-soaked felt littered his farm, igniting when disturbed by Abu Sari despite forty days having passed since they were launched by Israel.
The long-term effects of white phosphorus on soil and crops are yet unknown, and Lebanese authorities are still grappling with how to issue guidelines for farmers in affected areas.
Samples of soil affected by white phosphorus have been sent for lab testing to see if they need treating before next season’s crops are planted.

As clashes between Israel and the Lebanese movement Hezbollah are intensifying, Foreign Policy reported, citing an Israeli diplomat, that Israel would face a “strategic threat” in the case of an all-out war.
Hezbollah launched its most significant rocket assault at Israel last week, in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike that killed a senior Hezbollah commander, raising concerns that the conflict could rapidly escalate.
Starting on October 8, Hezbollah has launched thousands of rockets, anti-tank missiles, and drones into Israel, while the Israeli Air Force has responded with hundreds of airstrikes in southern Lebanon.
According to FP, “some 140,000 people have been displaced from their homes on both sides of the border.”
Despite calls from the United States and other Western allies to de-escalate, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that his country was considering the option of going to war with Lebanon and that, “in a total war, Hezbollah will be destroyed and Lebanon will be hit hard.”
However, Israel would also suffer significant losses, according to the report.
FP mentions a report issued by the Center for International and Strategic Studies, which estimates that “Hezbollah is a far more formidable foe than Hamas, since the former is thought to be the most heavily armed nonstate actor in the world”
Just Three Days
Speaking with FP, Michael Oren, who served as Israel’s ambassador to the United States during the Obama administration, said: “Hamas represents a tactical threat to the state of Israel. Hezbollah is a strategic threat to the state of Israel”.
The group, according to the report, is estimated to possess about 130,000 rockets and missiles “that could quickly overwhelm the country’s sophisticated air defense systems and hit its biggest cities.”

Israel’s use of sonic warfare is nothing new for citizens of Lebanon, but recent months have been unprecedented.
“It sounds like the plane engine is about to crash on top of you, and then there’s a boom that feels like an actual explosion. The whole building shakes. My body shakes,” recounts Nayla Kombarji* who, like anyone living in Beirut this summer, or in Lebanon’s south, has been subject to dozens of sonic booms by Israel’s air force.
“Some days they’re back-to-back, like six in one hour. They’ve been flying really low. It’s terrifying.”
There have been, at the very least, 111 sonic booms across Lebanon between 7 October and 20 August, the vast majority occurring between June and August, according to The New Arab’s analysis of Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).
However, given that many of NNA’s news reports refer to ‘multiple flybys’, the actual number of sonic booms could be double or triple that figure. While such tactics have been used by the Israeli Air Force for over a decade across Lebanon, never have there been so many, so consistently.

NEW TAIPEI, Taiwan, Sept 18 (Reuters) — The model of pagers used in detonations in Lebanon were made by Budapest-based BAC Consulting, Taiwanese pager firm Gold Apollo said on Wednesday, adding it had only licensed out its brand to the company and was not involved in the production of the devices.
At least nine people were killed and nearly 3,000 wounded when pagers used by Hezbollah members detonated simultaneously across Lebanon on Tuesday. According to a senior Lebanese security source and another source, explosives inside the devices were planted by Israel’s Mossad spy agency.
Images of destroyed pagers analysed by Reuters showed a format and stickers on the back that were consistent with pagers made by Gold Apollo.
“The product was not ours. It was only that it had our brand on it,” Gold Apollo founder and president, Hsu Ching-kuang, told reporters at the company’s offices in the northern Taiwanese city of New Taipei on Wednesday.
The company said in a statement that the AR-924 model was produced and sold by BAC.
Gold Apollo authorised “BAC to use our brand trademark for product sales in specific regions, but the design and manufacturing of the products are entirely handled by BAC,” the statement said.
Reuters calls and emails to BAC on Wednesday morning were not answered.
Hsu said earlier there had been problems with remittances from the firm.
“The remittance was very strange,” he said, adding that payments had come through the Middle East. He did not elaborate further.
Hezbollah fighters began using pagers in the belief they would be able to evade Israeli tracking of their locations, two sources familiar with the group’s operations told Reuters this year.
Hsu said he did not know how the pagers could have been rigged to explode.
While Hsu was meeting with reporters, police officials arrived at the company. Officials from Taiwan’s economy ministry also visited Gold Apollo.
The ministry said in a statement that there was no record of direct pager exports from Taiwan to Lebanon.
Hsu also said Gold Apollo was a victim of the incident and planned to sue the licensee.
“We may not be a large company but we are a responsible one,” he said. “This is very embarrassing.”

Cisco has denounced the U.S. government’s interception of hardware delivered by the company to customers after a photo surfaced this week showing federal agents planting a tracking device in one of its routers.
The National Security Agency’s practice of intercepting packages containing hardware as they are being delivered to customers — a procedure it calls “interdiction” — was first noted in classified documents released last December by Der Spiegel and journalist Jacob Appelbaum.
But the photos released on Tuesday by journalist Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept offered the first visual evidence of the NSA’s secret operation in which it intercepts and opens packages, removes hardware and implants tracking bugs and beacons for purposes of surveillance and sabotage.
One photo shows four agents carefully removing packaging tape from a Cisco-branded box that contains computer hardware. Several other Cisco-branded boxes can be seen in the photo stashes throughout a room that appears to be part of a larger warehouse.
The agents are described as belonging to the elitist Tailored Access Operations unit, the so-called “hacking arm” of the NSA. The agents are tasked with “getting the ungettable” from targets the NSA deems worthy of surveillance.
Another photo released Tuesday shows just how TAO agents get such material. The photo depicts a “load station,” presumably at the same warehouse, where agents implant beacons and other spy gear into intercepted hardware before it is repackaged and shipped to the intended consumer.
According to documents released by Greenwald, the NSA says such interception is possible thanks to the “support of Intelligence Community partners.” If Cisco is one such partner, they have made a concerted effort to conceal as much.
That way the USA could have been involved in inserting explosives into pagers for Israel:

It is an explosive that is sensitive to heat and friction. […] 20 grams of explosive were inserted into each device. 20 grams is a lot. Hezbollah distributed these devices into the hands of the organization five months ago.”

The AUBMC disagrees, implying in an obscure manner that the pagers were exchanged not in August but in April 2024, i.e. 5 months earlier — which is exactly when the Israeli Mossad supposedly distributed the explosives-trapped pagers to Hezbollah through, possibly, BAC Consulting. AUBMC also remains conspiciously obscure about what “Go-Live for switching to the new system” even means in terms of when the pagers were exchanged, and that raises even further suspicions and questions:

A Company Like No Other
Kape Technologies is a major player in the online privacy world, one of the three giants that collectively control the market. It owns many of the world’s top VPNs, including ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, ZenMate, Intego Antivirus, and a host of tech websites that promote its products. Kape brands can be seen sponsoring a wide array of public figures, such as Tucker Carlson, Angry Video Game Nerd, Drew Gooden, Lex Fridman, Cody Ko, Uncle Roger, and Ben Shapiro.
“We are living in an era of tyranny,” Shapiro says in one video endorsing the company, adding:
The Internet is at the frontier of a battle for control. When powerful interests want to push their agenda, they get big government and big tech to silence any voice that doesn’t fit the narrative. Well, I don’t like my voice being censored, I also don’t like being monitored by big Tech and big government, that’s why I use ExpressVPN [and] you should do the same.”
VPN stands for virtual private network and is a service that claims to protect your anonymity online. Instead of giving your information to an internet service provider, you provide it to the VPN company, who will scramble it, allowing users to get around government censorship and carry out activities online that they do not wish to be connected to themselves, such as purchasing banned products, partaking in certain activities, and communicating with others. Therefore, individuals trust VPNs to conceal their most sensitive activities.
Although it is headquartered in London and employs more than 1,000 people worldwide, Kape Technologies maintains a distinctly Israeli flavor. This begins with its owner, Teddy Sagi. Born in Tel Aviv, the tycoon, who previously spent time in prison for financial crimes, is estimated to be worth $6.4 billion, making him among the top ten richest Israelis.
Sagi has a long history of working closely with the IDF and is rumored to be extremely close to Israeli intelligence. In 2019, he donated $3 million to fund hundreds of academic scholarships for discharged Israeli soldiers. “It is a debt of honor for us and for me personally to express gratitude and appreciation that all of Israel’s citizens owe to you,” Sagi said at the Friends of the IDF Gala. He also made a point of finding jobs for former IDF soldiers in his businesses. […]
Furthermore, at the height of its campaign against Gaza, the billionaire very publicly gave more than a quarter-million dollars to an IDF charity helping transport soldiers to and from the front.
While in Cyprus in 2021, he was the subject of an assassination attempt that Israel accused Iran of masterminding, only fueling further speculation about his proximity to the national security state. (Iran, for its part, has denied the charges.)
Kape Technology’s connections to the Israeli security services do not end there. Indeed, the company is teeming with Israeli intelligence officials.Company co-founder and longtime CEO Koby Menachemi began his tech career as a developer for Unit 8200, while Liron Peer, the company’s current head of accounting, also served three years in the controversial military unit. Meanwhile, Menachemi’s successor as Kape CEO, Ido Erlichman, is a veteran of Unit 217, the Duvdevan Unit, an elite commando group that carries out intelligence operations and assassinations against the local Arab population.
Poacher Turned Online Gamekeepers?
Before 2018, Kape Technologies was known as Crossrider and was often considered a malware company. Crossrider was a platform that allowed its clients to monetize their software by forcing ads in front of users’ eyes. Users’ computers, both PC and Mac, had their browsers hijacked, changing their homepages to a search engine not of their choosing to generate advertising revenue for the company. Although Crossrider did not produce malware or viruses, its platform was notorious for allowing third parties to distribute such malware worldwide.
Thus, few people in the tech community were impressed when it changed its name to Kape Technologies and pivoted towards online privacy and protecting the public from unscrupulous actors. Erlichman told a local Israeli outlet that the name change and rebranding were necessary due to the “strong association to the past activities of the company.” In other words, the group had built up such a bad reputation that a complete facelift was necessary.
In 2017, Crossrider/Kape purchased its first VPN — CyberGhost — for $10 million. It then went on a shopping spree, acquiring several well-known companies, including ZenMate in 2018 for $5.5 million, Private Internet Access in 2019 for $126 million, and ExpressVPN in 2021 for a reported $936 million — by far the world’s most costly VPN acquisition to date.
It also bought a host of VPN review sites, such as vpnMentor and Wizcase — platforms that purport to supply readers with expert information about which VPN would be best for them. vpnMentor insists that this considerable conflict of interest does not affect their ratings. “Everything we do at vpnMentor is centered around providing value through honesty, transparency, and dedication,” they write. It is a remarkable coincidence that their award for the best three VPNs overall went to ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access — all Kape Technologies products. In fact, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet swept the medal positions in every category: best VPN for torrents, for Windows, for Android, for Mac, for iOS, and for American users. Wizcase’s 2024 top 3 VPN recommendations also went to ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access. Indeed, when visiting the website ranking page, users are met with a gigantic popup ad for a special deal on an ExpressVPN subscription.
