At least four hospitals in Lebanon announced on Friday that they were suspending work because of Israeli strikes, while a Hezbollah-affiliated health organisation said that 11 paramedics had been killed in the past 24 hours.
The four closures capped two weeks of Israeli strikes on hospitals and healthcare workers in Lebanon that have shuttered at least 37 facilities and killed dozens of medical staff, according to the World Health Organisation.
Late on Friday night, the Israeli army issued a statement alleging that Hezbollah was using medical vehicles to transport fighters and weapons, warning that it would strike any vehicle it suspected of being used for military purposes.
Hospital staff in southern Lebanon told the BBC that health facilities treating wounded civilians had been hit with direct Israeli strikes. The BBC has approached the IDF for comment.
Dr Mounes Kalakish, director of the Marjayoun governmental hospital in southern Lebanon, told the BBC that the hospital had no choice but to close on Friday after an airstrike hit two ambulances at the hospital’s entrance way on Friday, killing seven paramedics.
“The nurses and doctors were terrified,” he said. “We tried to calm them and carry on working, but it was not possible.”
The emergency director of the hospital, Dr Shoshana Mazraani, said she was sitting at the front of the building when the strike happened. She said that she heard the cries of the paramedics who were hit and ran towards the damaged ambulances, but was warned to stay back by colleagues fearful of a follow up strike.
The Marjayoun hospital had already been hanging on by a thread, Dr Mazraani said, with a core team of just 20 doctors remaining from the centre’s usual 120 staff. The closure on Friday was a “tragedy for the region”, she said.
“We serve a huge population here, many villages. We had 45 inpatient beds, all now empty. We were the only hospital providing dialysis in the region, for example. We have had to turn away emergency patients and tell others to leave.”
Rita Suleiman, the nursing director at the Saint Therese hospital, on the edge of Beirut’s southern suburbs, told the BBC that the hospital had also struggled on after being badly damaged by a strike on Friday but was later forced to suspend all services.
Other hospitals were carrying on with severely limited services. Dr Mohammed Hamadeh, director of the Tebnine hospital, told the BBC on Friday a nearby strike had rocked the building.
“The blast was very close,” he said. “We are still trying to operate but we cannot leave the confines of the hospital because it is too dangerous.”
Late on Friday night, the Salah Ghandour hospital in Bint Jbeil announced it had closed after being “violently shelled”, following an order from the Israeli army to evacuate.
The Israeli army said it was targeting a mosque adjacent to the hospital which it claimed was being used by Hezbollah fighters.
The strikes on healthcare facilities have not been limited to the south of Lebanon. Israel hit a medical centre in central Beirut on Thursday belonging to the Hezbollah-linked Islamic Health Organisation, killing nine and wounding 14. The Israeli army said the strike targeted “terror assets”.
The Lebanese Red Cross said on Thursday that four of its paramedics were wounded in a strike on a convoy evacuating patients, despite the organisation co-ordinating with the Israeli army.
Gabriel Karlsson, country manager in Beirut for the British Red Cross, told the BBC: “Health and aid workers must be able to help those in need without fearing for their own safety. Teams from the Red Cross and Red Crescent are a lifeline, supporting communities tirelessly — they must be protected.”
World Health Organisation director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday that 28 healthcare workers had been killed in Lebanon over the previous 24 hours, and many other healthcare staff were no longer reporting for work because of the strikes.
Dr Kalakish, the director of the Marjayoun hospital, told the BBC that prior to the strike that closed his hospital it was already operating with no anaesthesiologist or other specialists.
Some staff had fled the bombardment for their own safety, he said, while others had been prevented from reaching the hospital because of air strikes on nearby roads.
Lebanon’s Health Minister Firass Abiad said on Thursday that 97 rescue workers had been killed since Hezbollah and Israel began fighting last October.
More than 40 of those — paramedics and firefighters — were in just three days this past week, he said.

The great Ziofascist Israeli Führer Netanyahu threatens the Lebanese people and tries to drive a wedge between Lebanon and Iran in a warmongering propaganda speech:
“This is a message to the people of Lebanon:
Do you remember when your country was called the pearl of the Middle East?
I do.
So, what happened to Lebanon? A gang of tyrants and terrorists destroyed it. That’s what happened.
Lebanon was once known for its tolerance, for its beauty.
Today, it’s a place of chaos, a place of war.
Israel withdrew from Lebanon 25 years ago.
But the country that actually conquered Lebanon is not Israel. It’s Iran. Iran, which finances and arms Hezbollah to serve Iran’s interests at Lebanon’s expense.
Hezbollah has turned Lebanon into a stockpile of ammunition weapons and a forward Iranian military base.
Just one day after the October 7th massacre a year ago, Hezbollah joined the war against Israel.
It launched an unprovoked attack on our cities and on our citizens. It has since fired over 8,000 missiles at Israel, killing civilians without distinction — Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze.
Israel has decided to put an end to this. We’ve decided to do whatever is necessary to return our people safely to their homes.
Israel has a right to defend itself. Israel also has a right to win! And Israel will win!
We have degraded Hezbollah’s capabilities; we took out thousands of terrorists, including Nasrallah himself, and Nasrallah’s replacement, and the replacement of his replacement.
Today, Hezbollah is weaker than it has been for many many years.
Now you, the Lebanese people, you stand at a significant crossroads.
It is your choice.
You can now take back your country. You can return it to a path of peace and prosperity.
If you don’t, Hezbollah will continue to try to fight Israel from densely populated areas at your expense.
It doesn’t care if Lebanon is dragged into a wider war.
Christians, Druze, Muslims — Sunnis and Shiites — all of you are suffering because of Hezbollah’s futile war against Israel.
Today I ask every mother and every father in Lebanon a simple question:
Is it worth it? Because, it doesn’t have to be that way.
I know you want a better future for your children.
So I am speaking to all of you today.
There is a better way.
A better way for your children, for your cities, for your villages, for your country.
You deserve to restore Lebanon to its days of tranquility; you deserve a Lebanon that is different.
One Country — One Flag — One People.
Don’t let these terrorists destroy your future any more than they’ve already done.
Stand up and take your country back.
You have an opportunity that hasn’t existed in decades.
An opportunity to take care of the future of your children and grandchildren.
You have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Each of you can take a step for your future.
Even a small step.
You can make a difference.
I say to you, the people of Lebanon:
Free your country from Hezbollah so that this war can end.
Free your country from Hezbollah so that your country can prosper again, so that future generations of Lebanese and Israeli children will know neither war nor bloodshed, but will finally live together in peace.”
Replies and comments:
“Since the end of the war in 2006, their job has [been] to look at infractions across the border, either by Israel or by Hezbollah. But they’re under threat: Israel has asked them to vacate their bases. Now UNIFIL have said that’s not something they’re willing to do. In fact, the Irish president […] Michael Higgins said it was outrageous that […] the Israeli army threatened UNIFIL.”

A leader of a major faction in the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has warned that if Israel begins a war that involves the energy sector, the world will lose 12 million barrels per day, “and this is what we will make sure of.”
Abu Ali al-Askari, the head of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades Security Bureau, stated: “This is what we will be taking care of, but only God knows what our brethren in Yemen will do in Bab al-Mandab and our brethren in Iran will do in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Israeli leaders have threatened to launch a massive attack against Iran, including against nuclear power and oil infrastructure.
Askari warned further that the resistance’s response “will not be limited to Israel, but will extend to Washington’s bases and interests in Iraq and the region.”
Askari’s threat comes as Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a Yemeni military spokesman, claimed the attack on the Olympic Spirit tanker in the Red Sea. In a video message aired Thursday night, Saree said Yemeni forces launched multiple ballistic missiles targeting the tanker.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital oil transit chokepoint situated between Iran and Oman. Oil tankers carry approximately 17 million barrels of oil each day through the Strait, or 20 percent of the world’s total consumption.
Some analysts believe that oil prices, currently around $80 per barrel, could reach more than $300 per barrel in the case of a full blockade of the Gulf of Hormuz.
Israel is seeking to retaliate for Iran’s Operation True Promise 2, which saw the Islamic Republic launching at least 200 ballistic missiles against Israeli military and intelligence facilities across Israel on 1 October.
The Iranian attack came in retaliation for numerous Israeli aggressions, including the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah secretary-general Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC general Abbas Nilforoushan.
Al-Askari’s statement also comes after right-wing Israeli Channel 14 aired a segment on Tuesday featuring Ayatollah al-Sistani’s image on a list of potential assassination targets. […]

Scott Ritter: “Who’s operating the S-400 on Iranian soil? […] The Russians. Who’s flying the S-35s? Not Iranian pilots. Russians. So now [for] Israel to attack Iran, [it] is gonna go head to head with Russia. You think Israel wants to do that? You think Israel’s ready to do that? Do you think the United States is willing to let them do that?
Now what is Israel going to bomb? Are they gonna bomb the nuclear site? That’s the end of Israel. Israel disappears that quick. You understand, the first Israeli bomb that drops on Iran, over 500 missiles will immediately be fired. These are solid rocket fuel missiles you can immediately reload, fire 500 more within 15 minutes. That’s a thousand missiles, impacting every strategic site in Israel within 30 minutes of the first Israeli bomb dropping. […]
That’s going through the mind of Benjamin Netanyahu. You wanna know why he didn’t order the attack? Because he can’t order the attack. […]”

Despite all the happy talk from Washington about the U.S.’s “ironclad” relationship with Israel, the U.S. spies on them just like any other country, as we recently reported. The two top secret U.S. intelligence reports illustrate this dynamic beautifully. Both were produced on October 16, by the Pentagon’s National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, which is responsible for the preparation of geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) and of authoritative (and often classified) maps.
The first intelligence report is titled, “Israel: Defense Forces Continue Key Munitions Preparations and Covert UAV Activity Almost Certainly for a Strike on Iran.” The Top Secret document provides a sense of not just how much the intelligence community knows, but how much it doesn’t know. “We cannot definitively predict the scale and scope of a strike on Iran, and such a strike can occur with no further GEOINT warning,” the report states. In English, that means that based upon scrutiny of satellite, aircraft, and drone imagery, NGA doesn’t necessarily have the tools (by itself) to provide what they call “actionable” intelligence, to warn of an Israeli strike. It is raw reporting that has to be combined with that of other agencies — NSA, CIA, DIA, and on and on — for a full picture.
The lack of certainty is not a defect of the intelligence; it speaks to how complex intelligence work actually is and the vast $100 plus billion a year effort. Contrary to the popular imagination of a deep throat-like source delivering the truth in a shadowy garage, intelligence work involves drawing together information from all kinds of different sources to create a mosaic-like picture of what’s going on.
The intelligence report includes a rundown of the various aspects of Israeli military activities that the U.S. is monitoring to inform its judgments and conclusions: weapons handling, air defense, ground forces, Navy, Air, Special Forces, and even Israel’s Nuclear Forces. But even then, only the weapons handling and special forces categories are identified as having a “medium” predictive ability in regards to determining Israel’s action; the rest are designated “low” predictive ability.
The second intelligence report is titled “Israel: Air Force Continues Preparations for Strike on Iran and Conducts a Second Large-Force Employment Exercise.” The document details Israeli activities during an evident “mission rehearsal” (in U.S. lingo) that could be indicative of how Israel will strike Iran. Citing imagery analysis and other sources, the NGA report notes that the Israeli Air Force is already conducting covert drone operations over Iran (evidently doing its own spying), and how, as part of Israeli Air Force activity, has been handling air-launched ballistic missiles and other weapons.
