Irish PM Leo Varadkar [in Genocide Joe’s presence]: “As you know, the Irish people are deeply troubled about the catastrophe that’s unfolding before our eyes in Gaza. And when I travel the world, leaders often ask me why the Irish have such empathy for the Palestinian people. And the answer is simple: We see our history in their eyes. A story of displacement, of dispossession, a national identity question that are denied, forced emigration, discrimination, and now hunger.”

Al-Shifa:
Israeli forces launched a new raid on Gaza City’s al-Shifa hospital on Monday, just as Palestinians were preparing to have their pre-fast Ramadan meal before dawn.
The attack started shortly after 2 am local time (12 am GMT) with tanks advancing towards the medical complex under the cover of heavy aerial bombardment.
Tanks surrounded the hospital before shelling some of its buildings, including the surgery department, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
Initial reports say several people were killed and wounded but medical teams have not been able to reach them due to heavy Israeli fire in the hospital’s courtyards.
“The occupation army invaded al-Shifa Hospital for the fourth time since the beginning of the aggression against Gaza, directly shooting the specialised surgery building with bullets and targeting it with missiles,” the ministry said.
The entrance of the hospital also caught fire due to the heavy shelling, it added, warning that patients and families sheltering at the site were besieged.
At least 30,000 people were inside the hospital at the time of the attack, including displaced families, patients and medical staff.
Mohammed Eliwa, a journalist reporting from al-Shifa hospital, told Al Jazeera Arabic that Israeli forces were shooting anyone moving in the courtyards.
Hamadah Abdel Hadi, an activist also inside the hospital, said Israeli forces broke into the hospital and immediately targeted Al Jazeera staff.
Ismail Alghoul, the network’s correspondent, was beaten and dragged before getting arrested. Broadcast vehicles in the hospital were also destroyed, Al Jazeera said.
The Gaza-based government media office condemned the raid as a “war crime” and part of a “deliberate” Israeli policy to “eliminate the health sector and destroy hospitals”.
It said the Israeli army stormed al-Shifa with tanks, heavily armed soldiers and drones, “and began shooting inside the complex, which sparked fear and panic among the wounded, sick, and displaced”.
“This threatens the lives of thousands of people inside,” it added.
The Israeli military said the operation in al-Shifa was launched based on information that Hamas officials were in the area and repeated claims that the hospital was recently being used as a “command centre”.
It later said 80 people were detained from the hospital and that troops had “established control” over the facility.
Middle East Eye could not independently verify any of the military’s claims, which were not backed by evidence.
Hamas said the raid on al-Shifa hospital was an expression of “confusion, chaos and hopelessness” by the Israeli army amid its inability to achieve the stated military goals.
Al-Shifa hospital, the biggest in the Gaza Strip before the war, was brought to its knees last year following a weeks-long Israeli raid in which doctors were detained and key medical equipment was destroyed.

Dr. Nick Maynard: “I saw things at Al-Aqsa Hospital which… I still wake up at night thinking about. One child that I’ll never forget had burns so bad you could see her facial bones. There was no morphine to give her. So not only was she inevitably gonna die, but she would die in agony. And what made it even worse was there was nowhere for her to go and die. So she was just left on the floor of the emergency department. […]”
“The sheer volume of trauma that came in, people who had suffered almost all of them from bad explosive injuries. Of course most of them were killed at the scene of the bomb. But those that came in: We sometimes had dozens upon dozens coming in at once, often two- or threehundred in a 24 hour period. And the sheer volume often broke the system. It was impossible to triage the patients: We had such severe injuries that it was almost a lottery at times as to who would get treated, because there was so many of them.”
CNN Wolf’s Blitzer: “At your last day at the hospital, we are told, a missile attack blew open the wall of the ICU, of the intensive care unit, while you were in surgery. Just how much of attacks near Gaza’s hospitals disrupted urgent medical care?”
Dr. Nick Maynard: “Ah, almost completely. […] we had two more days to go at Al-Aqsa Hospital. We had to withdraw that afternoon once that missile had hit the intensive care unit. And of course, once all the foreign doctors left, the MSF tean left as well, many of the local doctors left as well, the hospital rapidly became disabled. And that has happened to the vast majority of the hospitals within the Gaza Strip, that they’ve been targeted, they’ve been attacked, ahm, many health care workers have been killed, many health care workers have been abducted, and there are barely any fully functioning hospitals left in the Gaza Strip.”
[… on Ziofascist Israel attacking Al-Shifa Hospital:]
“It seems to be happening exactly as happened in October and November to Shifa Hospital which became completely disabled, and then some of the doctors started working again. Ahm, it is now — I have spoken to a great friend of mine who’s a surgeon there in the last 48 hours — and […] it’s unspeakable what is happening there. The hospital has now stopped functioning, but there is still patients left there. And I think it’s important to say in all the years I’ve been in Gaza and worked at Shifa and other hospitals there, I have never — and I can only speak from my experience — I have never seen any evidence of any Hamas militants in the hospital. Ahm, and indeed, the two weeks I was working at Al-Aqsa Hospital, there were no signs of any Hamas militants. So it seems to me and what I have witnessed, is there is a direct targeting of the whole infrastructure of the healthcare system in Gaza.

The U.S. government will defund the United Nations agency that aids Palestinians through next year — even as 1.1 million people in Gaza face threats of famine in coming months — on the basis of flimsy allegations by Israel against a tiny minority of the agency’s staff that have yet to be proven.
Congress passed the defunding measure as part of a $1.2 trillion spending package to avert a partial government shutdown. In addition to stripping funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, through March 2025, the bill includes the $3.8 billion the U.S. sends to Israel every year.
The bill also contains a long-standing provision that would limit aid to the Palestinian Authority, which governs the occupied West Bank, if “the Palestinians initiate an International Criminal Court (ICC) judicially authorized investigation, or actively supports such an investigation, that subjects Israeli nationals to an investigation for alleged crimes against Palestinians.”
After a late-night vote, the Senate sent the bill to President Joe Biden to sign it into law on Saturday.

We have lists already about 500 families that are willing, at the drop of a hat, to just move into, ahh… We have north, central and south, ahh, Gaza, and people are gonna start building towns. We have names of the towns, we have where we’re building them, it’s already being planned. And we have people signed up. You can’t leave it without Jews in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian boy: “We were forced to undress and they handcuffed us. We had to stand for some two hours in the building, and then they took us to Al-Shifa, in the middle of Al-Shifa. We were there for an hour before they took us to the Al-Shifa tower, to the first floor. They forced us to lay down, and then they took us to the top floor. They took our ID cards and found out everyone’s age. They held us for three hours and then we got told we could leave unharmed towards the south.
Suddenly, they started firing, we all dropped to the ground. They started taking turns while sniping at us. They shot all of them. One close to me was first shot in his stomach and then his head, all his blood spilled over me.”
Interviewer: “How many were you?”
Palestinian boy: “There were nine of us. Abou Awad and his two sons got martyred, and my father — may God have mercy on him — and my brother Yousef. There was also a 67-year-old, his children are still missing. He asked me to uncuff him, he wanted to leave with me. I did, and just as he started to move, he got shot in the head. My dad was dying, I shook him, in a whisper he told me ‘If you can escape, do it,’ and I did. In that moment they began shooting. When I looked back, I couldn’t hear my father and there was no response from anyone.”

After they had shot him, they went upstairs, to the men upstairs and shot them. My son is still 15 years old! 15 years old! And they shot him! May God not bless them!
They made a boy strip and beat another one in front of us. They beat him. They shot people in the streets. People are strewn across the streets, my dear. They didn’t spare anyone.”
Palestinian man: “I’m Ahmeed Morsheed, they took us from our home after targeting it. We were injured and started shouting ‘help us.’ They took us from our home. They took us to a burnt place, they forced us to sleep on broken glass and ceramics. And we were tied, our hands behind our backs, for three days in the cold. They left my mother and all my siblings with us for the first night, then they took them out. Two nights without them, after they finally let us out, they checked our identities. They didn’t interrogate us; they were just spending time. They didn’t check or even look at our IDs. In the last hours, they checked our IDs. Then they told us to go to the seaside street. We were trapped in the house and heard screams. We witnessed field executions. It was difficult.”

UN Security Council ceasefire resolution:
“14 votes in favor, 0 vote against, 1 abstention [i.e. the USA]. *applause beginning* The draft resolution has been adopted as resolution 2728.”
In a statement, the prime minister’s office said that the decision was “a clear retreat from the consistent US position in the Security Council since the beginning of the war”, and one that “gives Hamas hope that international pressure will allow them to get a ceasefire without releasing our hostages”.
USA:
John Kirby: “Number one: It’s a non-binding resolution. So there’s no impact at all on Israel and Israel’s ability to continue to go after Hamas.”
From Hannah Birkenkötter’s article:
Is the resolution legally binding?
Immediately after the resolution had passed, US Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that “the resolution today is a non-binding resolution”. A similar view was expressed by Linda Thomas-Greenberg, the US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who stated that the United States fully “support[s] some of the critical objectives in this non-binding resolution” (here, at minute 26:00). In a press meeting held by the E10 afterwards (here, starting at minute 3:00), the South Korean representative questioned the legal validity of the resolution on the basis that it does not contain the word “decide” and was not adopted under Chapter VII. Is there any substance to this claim?
As is well established, the Security Council can adopt legally binding resolutions. Under Article 25 of the UN Charter, the “Members of the United Nations agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council”. The crucial word of the provision is “decision”: if the Security Council uses hortatory language, such as recommending measures, no legal obligation arises. In addition, the Security Council routinely uses the phrase “acting under Chapter VII” when it e.g. establishes peacekeeping missions or authorizes the use of force. But is this phrase necessary for legal validity, as claimed by the South Korean representative? The answer is in the negative.

Sami Barhoum: “How did Israel respond to the Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza? It responded by committing massacres. The owner of this house is a US national. Israeli warplanes bombed this house without prior warning. The raid on this house led to more than 20 martyrs and dozens of wounded. They were all turned into pieces. This is how Israel responds to the Security Council’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Eylon Levy, the recently-suspended Israeli government spokesperson, has now been terminated from his position, according an N12 report on Wednesday night.
N12 reported that the government spokesperon’s office has decided to dismiss Eylon Levy from his position in the coming days on Tuesday night.
The government’s decision to oust him from his role as the “national spokesman” in foreign media was made due to a series of diplomatic incidents in which he was involved — including an unusual response to a tweet by the British Foreign Minister.
Levy is employed on a monthly renewed contract, and the office does not intend to extend his starting from next month. N12’s source in the government spokespeople office explained the decision saying that Levy “strayed from the messages conspicuously and took liberties that caused diplomatic incidents.”
The government office clarified that “the latest incident in which he clashed with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” N12 reports.
The government office listed several additional incidents, including Levy’s audition on “Dancing with the Stars,” which was made without confirming this with his superiors beforehand. Additionally, he posted a video at the beginning of the war that turned out to be fake and mocked Nasrallah and his speechwriter instead of calming tensions.
Video ‘confessions’:
USA:
U.S. State Department Matthew Miller faced calls to resign Thursday after he accused a United Nations special rapporteur of engaging in antisemitism — an attack that came days after the human rights expert presented a report concluding that Israel’s assault on Gaza has met the threshold of genocide.
Asked about the report during a press briefing on Wednesday, Miller said the U.S. has “for a longstanding period of time opposed the mandate of this special rapporteur, which we believe is not productive.”
“And when it comes to the individual who holds that position, I can’t help but note a history of antisemitic comments that she has made that have been reported,” Miller added, pointing to comments that Francesca Albanese — the U.N. special rapporteur on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories — “made in December that appeared to justify the attacks of October 7.”
[…]
Miller’s attack on Albanese Wednesday — which echoed earlier attacks on the special rapporteur by U.S. officials and lawmakers — sparked immediate backlash and calls for his resignation.
“Matthew Miller should be forced to resign for trying to endanger the life of a U.N. official with falsehoods,” Ashish Prashar, a spokesperson for Gaza Voices, said in a statement. Albanese said earlier this week that she has faced threats following the publication of her report accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Rohan Talbot, director of advocacy and campaigns at Medical Aid for Palestinians, called the State Department spokesman’s remarks a “truly despicable, Trumpian smearing of a principled human rights expert.”
“Note the lack of substantive rebuttals of her careful analysis, and the resort to ad hominem attacks,” Talbot wrote on social media. “Not the sign of a confident administration.”
Krystal Ball: “You aren’t crazy. The horrors you are watching everyday are exactly what they seem to be. The powerless college kids who oppose this genocide: They’re not the maniacs, they’re not the monsters. The supposedly civilized class of DC elites who’ve turned the Gaza Strip into a pit of human misery, death, starvation and despair — they are the true demons. One day I’d like to see some deep reporting about how these supposedly liberal humanitarians learned to love the crime of crimes [i.e. genocide].”

Financial disruption:
Palestinian banks could be cut off from the Israeli banking system starting next week following a decision by Israel’s finance minister to cease dealings between the two financial institutions, according to a report on Thursday by Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has two days to convene a cabinet meeting to discuss reversing plans by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to isolate Palestinian banks from both the Israeli and international banking systems.
The Palestinian economy is based on the Israeli currency, the shekel, making it reliant on ties to Israel and its financial dealings with the rest of the world must go through the Bank of Israel and Israeli banks.
Earlier this month, the far-right minister Smotrich threatened to paralyse the Palestinian Authority’s economy in response to the United States imposing sanctions on four West Bank extremist settlers accused of violence against Palestinians.
Israeli banks have heeded the sanctions despite calls by Smotrich not to comply.
Two Israeli banks, Israel Discount Bank and Bank Hapoalim, currently maintain the connections of Palestinian banks with the banking system in Israel and globally.
To protect them from lawsuits involving the Palestinian Authority for “transfering funds to terror groups”, the Israeli government has been issuing a waiver of protection for the two banks on an annual basis, signed by the finance minister.
Smotrich is now refusing to renew the arrangement, which has been in place for years.
Without this protection, the PA will be stripped of immunity and the Israeli banks will be exposed to lawsuits and are expected to cut ties with Palestinian banks.
The consequences of isolating the PA from the financial world and Israel’s economy would significantly paralyse the Palestinian economy.
Any Israeli company that has business relations with the PA will no longer be able to deposit Palestinian cheques or receive payments from Palestinian banks, according to Haaretz.
Even Palestinian workers, who must only receive their wages in a bank deposit according to a 2022 agreement between Palestinian and Israeli authorities, will not be able to continue receiving wages in Israel, unless they are made in cash.
Other areas that would be affected by Smotrich’s move include Palestinian export and import operations, which go through Israeli ports, and Palestinian tax funds, which are collected by Israel.

Palestinian father: “We’re 38 in our household. That’s me, my siblings, their wives, their children, and my mum, my nephew and his wife. All of us were there.
All of a sudden, everything turned into a war zone. It was like an earthquake. They hit us with a missile right in the living room, all civilians. No one has anything to do with any movements. Once we got hit, we ran downstairs, to the basement, the only room there. Barely a few minutes later, we got hit again by the F-16. The house got completely destroyed, left with no sign of a human or an animal.
And we sat in the basement for 12 days. We were forced to drink olive brine, we had jars of olive, we drank that. Water from corn cans. By God, we reached a point, the kids had to drink old shisha water, the water in the hookah. And they were fighting over it, while slimy.
In the last three days, my nephew was seeing the kids dying. The girl and the children are dropping dead around him. We had four children that were too young. He went out to look for some water for the kids, a can, anything for them to eat. He barely stepped out, he was instantly hit, bombed to smithereens. By God, it is impossible to count the bombs that dropped on us! And they drove over us with a military tank! We thought we would get buried here. That’s when we lifted the banners and went out. We left the martyr, and we carried my daughter, Hadya, may she rest in peace.”
“She just couldn’t take it. No food, no water, nothing to eat. She couldn’t take it. We put her in this cover and dragged her out. And today, may she rest in peace.”

“There is a very strong notion of ‘Please don’t make too much noise, otherwise your family member, your hostage, could be moved to a lower place once a list will be, ah, composed.’ Ahm, there is a lot of pressure coming from the Cabinet ministers stating these thoughts, okay? ‘Be quiet. Be quiet. Play along. Come with us to these delegations, and meet with the UN, and put pressure on outside players. But don’t say anything to contradict the official governmental line.’ And the Israeli public has been pumped with ‘Together we will win, together we will win.’ And, and, we’re not winning, we’re not winning at all. So this charade should stop. [laughs] We need some international intervention, because the way things are going in Israel now, we’re, we’re, we’re jumping straight head-down into the abyss.”
“One day before they told us that he died, they told us that he was certainly alive. But only one day later, they come to our house, and they told us this: ‘He was killed by Hamas.’ At the time, I didn’t have the desire to know how he was killed. I imagined that he was shot. I didn’t ask where they shot him or if the tortured him. […]
But two weeks later we got a message from the doctor who saw his corpse. He didn’t make an autopsy. He only checked on him and made an MRI. He told us that there is no signs of a gunshot, no signs of broken bones, there were no signs of beating or bleeding or anything indicating that he had an external injury or trauma.
