Netanyahu has long considered Iran Israel’s primary threat and has tried for decades to get the United States to attack Iran. Before that, Netanyahu forcefully advocated the invasion of Iraq. These facts bear consideration and are cause for concern when considering Netanyahu’s incentives.
The prime minister was a leading figure pushing the United States to invade Iraq in the lead-up to 2003. In an address to the U.S. Congress in 2002, Netanyahu promised, “If you take out Saddam, Saddam’s regime, I guarantee you that it will have enormous positive reverberations on the region.” Regarding Iraq’s nuclear program, Netanyahu claimed, “There is no question whatsoever that Saddam is seeking, is working, is advancing towards to the development of nuclear weapons.” He urged the United States forward, arguing that it “must destroy” the regime of Saddam Hussein.
Whether Netanyahu — and the U.S. foreign policy establishment — were being cynical or foolish (or both), the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 was ruinous for both the United States and the Middle East — including Israel. A geyser of extremism erupted across the region, causing a profusion of wars, instability, and terrorism. Plunging into war with Iran could be worse than Iraq.
Netanyahu and his supporters in Washington view the problem as existential. Since the 1990s, Netanyahu has raised the alarm over the imminent development of nuclear weapons by Iran, often pressing the United States for permission to take direct military action against Tehran or imploring the United States to do so on its behalf. This effort has been coupled with clandestine Israeli efforts to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program, such as the targeted assassinations of top Iranian nuclear scientists and facilities.

Applying the death penalty to Palestinian detainees who are “terrorists” is the “right” solution to tackle the problem of prison overcrowding, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said in a tweet yesterday.
His post came after the Israeli government approved his proposal to build about 936 additional prison places to hold Palestinian prisoners.
Ben-Gvir, leader of the far-right Jewish Power party, noted: “I’m glad that the government approved my proposal that will allow the Israel Defence Forces to build 936 (in total 1,600) additional prison places for security prisoners,” referring to Palestinian prisoners.
“The additional construction will allow the prison service to take in more terrorists and will bring a partial solution to the overcrowding crisis,” he added.
He went on: “The death penalty for terrorists is the right solution to the overcrowding problem, until then — glad that the government approved the proposal I brought.”
Earlier yesterday, the Israeli government approved the addition of about 1,000 prison places for Palestinian prisoners, at a cost of about 450 million shekels ($119.21 million). Some 50 per cent of the funding will come from the Ministry of Defence’s budget, with the remaining allocated from other ministries, according to the Walla news website.
The Government Media Office in Gaza said yesterday that the Israeli occupation army has arrested more than 5,000 Palestinians since it began its brutal bombing campaign on the Strip in October 2023.

Google said on Thursday it had terminated 28 employees after some staff participated in protests against the company’s cloud contract with the Israeli government. Employees staged sit-ins at their offices, some for more than eight hours.
The Alphabet unit said a small number of pro-Palestine employees entered and disrupted work at a few unspecified office locations. They occupied the office of the chief technology officer of Google Cloud and held posters reading “No cloud apartheid”, “Googlers against genocide” and “Don’t be evil, stop retaliation”, a reference to Google’s former corporate slogan.
New York police made four trespassing arrests in response to the protest while police in Sunnyvale, California made five, according to the New York Post. Roughly 50 protesters occupied Google’s New York office; about 80 protested in Sunnyvale.
“Physically impeding other employees’ work and preventing them from accessing our facilities is a clear violation of our policies, and completely unacceptable behavior,” the company said in a statement.
Chris Rackow, Google’s vice-president of global security, was more blunt in an email to employees, per CNBC: “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again.”
Google said it had concluded individual investigations, resulting in the termination of 28 employees, and would continue to investigate and take action as needed.
In a statement, Google workers affiliated with the No Tech for Apartheid campaign called it a “flagrant act of retaliation” and said that some employees who did not directly participate in Tuesday’s protests were also among those Google fired.
“This evening, Google indiscriminately fired 28 workers, including those among us who did not directly participate in yesterday’s historic, bicoastal 10-hour sit-in protests. This is a clear indication that Google values its $1.2bn contract with the genocidal Israeli government and military more than its own workers,” the statement reads.
The protesting faction says that Project Nimbus, a $1.2bn contract awarded to Google and Amazon.com in 2021 to supply the Israeli government with cloud services, supports the development of military tools by the Israeli government.
In its statement, Google maintained that the Nimbus contract “is not directed at highly sensitive, classified, or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services”.
In a press briefing on Wednesday, Gabriel Schubiner — a software engineer who quit his job at Google over the company’s contracts with Israel — said: “Google has for years, lied about the specific complicity with the military. However, we know from internal organizing that this is not true. We know that Google is deeply complicit with the Israeli military.”
Schubiner said internal conversations with fellow workers who found themselves giving trainings on how to use Google Cloud directly to the Mossad, Israel’s national intelligence agency, revealed the Israeli military is a primary owner of the contract — and that the contracts were not primarily targeted at civil services and civil society, as Google had claimed.
When rumblings of who Google was truly engaged in business with grew louder, Schubiner said he and other employees began applying pressure on their company.
“We’ve done petitions, both internal and public, with thousands of signatures across Amazon and Google. We have done press and staged pressure campaigns, as well as protests. We have escalated through leadership chains. We have opened this conversation in company forums,” Schubiner said.
“We have really done everything that we can internally to try to get our voices heard. And leadership has consistently lied to workers and they’ve consistently not only lied, but repressed, silenced and harassed workers.”
Schubiner said his Muslim and Palestinian colleagues in particular were subjected to “the most intense retaliation bias” for speaking out against the contracts.
Protests at Google are not new. In 2018, workers successfully pushed the company to shelve a contract with the US military, Project Maven, meant to analyze aerial drone imagery with potential application in warfare. Also in 2018, the company saw a major walkout in response to its handling of sexual harassment by executives.

In the coming days Israel will have to make historic policy decisions, ones that could shape its fate and the fate of the entire region for generations to come. Unfortunately, Benjamin Netanyahu and his political partners have repeatedly proven that they are unfit to make such decisions. The policies they pursued for many years have brought Israel to the brink of destruction. So far, they have shown no regret for their past mistakes, and no inclination to change direction. If they continue to shape policy, they will lead us and the whole Middle East to perdition. Instead of rushing into a new war with Iran, we should first learn the lessons […]

The House swiftly approved $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies in a rare Saturday session, Democrats and Republicans joining together after months of political turmoil over renewed American support for repelling Russia’s invasion.
With overwhelming support, the $61 billion in aid for Ukraine delivered a strong showing of American backing as lawmakers race to deliver a fresh round of U.S. support to the war-torn ally. Some lawmakers cheered on the House floor and waved blue-and-yellow flags of Ukraine.
The unusual process, with each bill having its own vote, allowed unique coalitions to form around the bills, pushing them forward. The whole package will go to the Senate, where passage in the coming days is nearly assured. President Joe Biden has promised to sign it immediately.

The Nasser hospital massacre:
Palestinian civil defense discovered hundreds of bodies buried by Israeli forces in a mass grave inside the complex of Khan Younis’ Nasser Medical Complex on Saturday.
Rescue workers said they had removed at least 200 bodies as of 12:00 pm local time on Sunday, and they estimated that at least another 200 remained, Middle East Eye reported.
“We found corpses without heads, bodies without skins, and some had their organs stolen,” the director-general of the Government Media Office said in a statement shared by Quds News Network.
“Following the mass graves at Al-Shifa hospital, it looks like Israel is a voracious death machine turning hospitals in Gaza into graveyards.”
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) withdrew from Khan Younis on April 7. While they occupied the city, they stormed the Nasser Medical Complex in February, arresting several doctors, damaging the structure with shelling, and rendering it unable to function as a hospital.
Al Jazeera reporter Hani Mahmoud said the bodies found in the Nasser grave included children, young men, and older women. Rescues said that some of the bodies they found had been buried with their hands tied behind their backs, according to Middle East Eye.
“Our teams continue their search and retrieval operations for the remaining martyrs in the coming days as there are still a significant number of them,” Palestinian emergency services said in a statement shared with Al Jazeera.

From that April 21 article:
During a press conference on Friday, Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), an international humanitarian organization, which is involved in the relief effort, announced that at least three vessels are set to depart from the western Turkish port of Tuzla on the Sea of Marmara, south of Istanbul.
Approximately 1,000 professionals, including doctors, lawyers, and academics, are set to join the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, hoping to set sail from Istanbul for the besieged enclave soon, despite Israel’s threats.
No departure date has yet been set as organizers said they are now waiting for permission to sail from the Turkish authorities, adding that they have notified the Turkish government, the United Nations and other international institutions about the mission earlier.
Gaza has been under an Israeli land, air and sea blockade since 2007.
Activists from 12 national human rights groups from various countries including Germany, Malaysia, Palestine, Norway, Argentina, Spain, Canada, and South Africa, accompanied by journalists, will reportedly participate in the effort.
“The Gaza Freedom Flotilla is composed of unarmed civilians that are here on a peaceful mission to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza and to deliver humanitarian assistance as requested by the International Court of Justice,” explained Ann Wright, a retired US army colonel and former diplomat.
Speaking to the Anadolu news agency, Wright addressed the possibility of an Israeli attack and said that Israel’s record is quite full in this regard, adding that another misstep by Israel could jeopardize its own security.
Fauziah Mohd Hasan, a doctor affiliated with the Malaysian Freedom Flotilla Movement, highlighted the extensive preparations for the mission, which involved over 280 prominent individuals from various fields worldwide.
Dylan Saba, an US writer and attorney who is planning to travel with the flotilla, said he was joining in part because “there is an obligation for citizens of the world to act, where governments have failed, and to act in the spirit of international law.”
In 2010, a similar mission with ships carrying more than 600 activists from more than 30 countries, gained worldwide attention after an Israeli raid on a flotilla that included a Turkish ship, the Mavi Marmara, killed 10 people and sparked a diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Israel.

Israel is in violation of a White House directive requiring recipients of American military assistance to comply with international humanitarian law and permit the unimpeded delivery of U.S.-funded humanitarian support, USAID officials concluded in a confidential United States paper reviewed by Devex.
The findings earlier this month follow the Feb. 8 issuance of a national security memo from the White House instructing U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to “obtain credible and reliable written assurances” from U.S. weapons recipients that they will abide by international humanitarian law, and report those findings to the White House and Congress. In Israel’s case, it would only apply to offensive weapons.
In a submission to Blinken, USAID “assesses the government of Israel (GOI) does not currently demonstrate necessary compliance” with the memo’s requirement that it facilitate and not impede “the transport of delivery of United States humanitarian assistance” as well as U.S.-backed international efforts to provide relief.
The USAID paper also voiced “serious concerns that the killing of nearly 32,000 people, of which the GOI itself assesses roughly two-thirds are civilians, may well amount to a violation of the international humanitarian law.” But it added that a final determination would be subject “to detailed analysis” by U.S. government lawyers. The current death toll has risen to over 34,000, according to U.N. estimates, which are based on figures compiled by Hamas-run Health Ministry.
The paper was cleared by 10 USAID officials, underscoring its widespread backing of the findings. But Sonali Korde, the agency’s deputy assistant administrator and head of the Bureau for Humanitarian Affairs, signed off on the document with the phrase INFO, bureaucratic shorthand for passing it up the chain of command without committing to its conclusions. Blinken is required to formally certify to Congress in the coming weeks whether Israel complies with the White House determination.
A U.S. official said that the marking of INFO on U.S. government memos and documents “is common and can mean different things.” For instance, the official said, it could indicate the official is traveling, unable to complete a review of the document in time, or referring to other members of their team. But the official did not say whether Korde backed the conclusion of USAID’s memo. A USAID spokesperson declined to “comment on alleged leaked documents.”
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, told Devex by text that “Israel operates and continues to operate according to international law.”
Clearing debris in the future:
Israel’s war in Gaza has created 37m tonnes of debris, much of it laced with unexploded bombs, which could take more than a decade to remove, a top UN demining official said.
Nearly seven months into the war, there is an average 300kg of rubble a square metre of land in Gaza, Pehr Lodhammar, the former United Nationals Mine Action Service chief for Iraq, told a news conference.
“Based on the current [amount] of debris in Gaza, with 100 trucks we are talking about 14 years of work … to remove it,” he said. With the war continuing, it was impossible to estimate how long clearance might take at its end, he added.
Israel has been accused of “domicide” over the intensity of its bombing campaign in Gaza, which has reduced large swathes of the strip to ruins. Sixty-five per cent of the buildings destroyed in Gaza were residential, Lodhammar said.
Clearing and rebuilding them will be slow and dangerous work because of the threat from shells, missiles or other weapons buried in collapsed or damaged buildings. On average about 10% of weapons failed to detonate when they were fired, Lodhammar said, and had to be removed by demining teams.

Israel is reportedly setting up a complex system of checkpoints that will prevent men of “military age” from fleeing Rafah in preparation for its offensive on the southern Gaza border city, a senior western official familiar with Israel’s military plans has told Middle East Eye on condition of anonymity.
The checkpoints are designed to allow some women and children to leave Rafah ahead of an expected Israeli offensive, but unarmed, civilian Palestinian men will likely be separated from their families and remain trapped in Rafah during the assault.
The previously unreported disclosure of Israel’s construction of a ring of checkpoints around Rafah underscores how Israel is pushing ahead with plans to attack the city where over one million displaced Palestinians are sheltering in tents and makeshift camps.
“They [the Israelis] have set up or are setting up sophisticated checkpoints….They allow women and children to move, but fighting aged males are another thing,” the senior official said.
The creation of gender-based checkpoints around Rafah would put a spotlight back on Israel’s practice of stripping and forcibly detaining male Palestinian men and children, as it faces rising scrutiny in the West of its conduct in the war.
The rounding up of Palestinian males in Gaza and photographing them stripped to their underwear drew condemnation in December, with the US calling the images “deeply disturbing.”
Relatives of many of the men photographed recognised them and said they had nothing to do with Hamas. Israel’s military was later accused of staging footage of men surrendering weapons.
“Israel considers every male a Hamas fighter until proven otherwise,” Abbas Dahouk, a former senior military advisor at the State Department and military attache in the Middle East told Middle East Eye.
“It’s not a sound move. Cordoning Rafah is a daunting task and good luck separating fathers and sons from their families.”
Israel’s far-right national security minister has reportedly asked whether the military could kill some of the Palestinians taken captive instead of arresting them — the latest comment by one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s multiple extremist cabinet members that dehumanizes residents of Gaza.
The comments by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir were revealed Friday by Hebrew outlets Channel 12 and Ynet, and translated to English by the Times of Israel.
The Israeli Defense Force’s chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, briefed ministers at a security cabinet meeting last week about recent operations in Gaza, where Israel has been carrying out a military offensive for almost seven months now in response to Hamas’ attack on Oct. 7 that killed about 1,200 people and captured roughly 250.
During the briefing, Halevi said that hundreds of Palestinians were recently arrested after surrendering to the military.
“Why are there so many arrests?” Ben-Gvir allegedly asked. “Can’t you kill some? Do you want to tell me they all surrender? What are we to do with so many arrested? It’s dangerous for the soldiers.”
Halevi was perplexed at the question, according to the Times of Israel, responding: “Dangerous for who?”
“We don’t shoot people who come out with their hands up. We shoot those who fight us,” the IDF official reportedly told Ben-Gvir. “There’s no dilemma here. Those who surrender, we arrest.”
Ziofascist great leader Benjamin Netanyahu [telling a part of the big lie]: “The International Criminal Court in the Hague is contemplating issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli government and military officials as war criminals. This would be an outrage of historic proportions. International bodies like the ICC arose in the wake of the Holocaust committed against the Jewish people. They were set up to prevent such horrors, to prevent future genocides. Yet now, the International Court is trying to put Israel in the dock. It’s trying to put us in the dock as we defend ourselves against genocidal terrorists and regimes — Iran of course — that openly works to destroy the one and only Jewish [i.e. Zionist, Ziofascist and Zionazi] state.
Branding Israel’s leaders and soldiers war criminals will pour jet fuel on the fires of anti-Semitism, those fires that are already raging on the campuses of America and across capitals around the world. It will also be the first time that a democratic country [= lie] fighting for its life [= lie] according to the rules of war [= lie] is itself accused of war crimes [= lie].
