Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that he does not personally care about what he referred to as the “Palestinian issue”, according to a report in The Atlantic.

Published on Wednesday, the report gave a picture of 11 months of Washington’s negotiation efforts in the region after the outbreak of war in Gaza, citing “two dozen participants at the highest levels of government in America and across the Middle East”.

It stated that during a visit to Saudi Arabia in January, Blinken and the crown prince met in the Saudi city of al-Ula to discuss the prospect of the Gulf kingdom normalising relations with Israel amid the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza.

Months earlier, Riyadh had appeared to be making progress in forming ties with Israel during US-led discussions, which were later derailed by the outbreak of war on 7 October.

If a normalisation deal were to occur, the crown prince expressed to Blinken a desire for calm in Gaza.

According to The Atlantic, Blinken enquired whether the Saudis could tolerate Israel periodically re-entering the territory to strike the besieged Gaza Strip.

“They can come back in six months, a year, but not on the back end of my signing something like this,” Mohammed bin Salman responded.

“Seventy percent of my population is younger than me,” the crown prince explained to Blinken.

“For most of them, they never really knew much about the Palestinian issue. And so they’re being introduced to it for the first time through this conflict. It’s a huge problem. Do I care personally about the Palestinian issue? I don’t, but my people do, so I need to make sure this is meaningful.”

No deal without a Palestinian state

A Saudi official described this account of the conversation to The Atlantic as “incorrect”.

In public, Mohammed bin Salman has stated that Saudi Arabia will not normalise relations with Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“The Kingdom will not cease its diligent efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said at a recent annual address before the Shura Council in Riyadh.

“We confirm that Saudi Arabia will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until that goal is achieved.”

According to The Atlantic, in return for a normalisation deal with Israel, Saudi Arabia would seek to enter into a mutual defence treaty with Washington.

That would require ratification from two-thirds of the US Senate, which the crown prince told Blinken was most likely under a Biden administration. That was partly due to a perception that US progressives may back it if a Palestinian state was built into the deal.

Mohammed bin Salman told Blinken that pursuing a normalisation deal with Israel would come at great personal cost to him. He pointed at the example of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, who was assasinated in 1981, a few years after signing a peace accord with Israel.

“Half my advisers say that the deal is not worth the risk,” the de-facto Saudi leader said. “I could end up getting killed because of this deal.”

Polling during the early stages of the war showed that over 90 percent of Saudis believed that Arab states should cut ties with Israel.

Despite that, there has been a crackdown on acts of Palestinian solidarity in Saudi Arabia, with reports of people being detained for expressing opinions on the conflict on social media, as well as for wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh in the holy city of Mecca.

‘Full support for Palestine’

Earlier this month, Middle East Eye asked senior Saudi royal Prince Turki al-Faisal about the crackdown on Palestinian solidarity in the kingdom.

“I haven’t felt myself any restrictions on my expressions of support for Palestine in Saudi Arabia, nor have I seen any particular reporting on that,” he responded. “Except perhaps in some publications that are not friendly to Saudi Arabia.

“But what I see of the Saudi press, whether written or on television or in social media, is full support for Palestine and no restriction on expressing support for Palestinians.”

Prince Turki said that while he was not privy to official discussions, the chances of normalisation at present were slim due to Israel’s stance on Palestinian statehood.

“The whole [Israeli] government is saying no Palestinian state. So how can there be normalisation between us and them with those positions in place?”

Prince Turki also dismissed speculation that Hamas may have carried out its surprise attack on southern Israel — which killed around 1,140 people — in order to torpedo Saudi-Israel normalisation.

“For Hamas to have done what it did, it would have required [time] to prepare for it,” he said. “At least a couple of years to gather the human and material resources to launch a campaign like that.

Israel made clear that it would respond forcefully to Iran. Netanyahu in a public address shortly after the attack said Tehran would “pay for it,” adding, “We will stand by the rule we established: Whoever attacks, we will attack them.”

Biden on Wednesday told reporters that he did not support an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, though he didn’t provide specifics on conversations with Israel on that risk.

“We’ll be discussing with the Israelis what they’re going to do, but [the Group of 7 countries] agree that they have a right to respond, but they should respond in proportion,” Biden said.

Biden added that sanctions would be imposed on Iran. Aides said that the U.S. was extensively communicating with Israel about a response, which could include a military strike, the officials said. Among the possible options under consideration are strikes on Iran-backed militias or directly on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces in Yemen or Syria, a second official said. U.S. aides communicated a preference for a strategic but limited retaliation.

But the president may now have far less say in shaping events.

For months, Netanyahu and his government have consistently ignored American counsel as to how to prosecute the war in Gaza against Hamas after the Oct. 7 terror attacks. Biden and his aides were repeatedly frustrated by Israel’s widening war aims within Gaza — with a devastating impact on Palestinian civilians — even at the cost of a deal to free the remaining hostages.

In late January, as the death toll in Gaza climbed to 25,000 and droves of Palestinians fled their razed cities in search of safety, Israel’s military asked for 3,000 more bombs from the American government. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew, along with other top diplomats in the Jerusalem embassy, sent a cable to Washington urging State Department leaders to approve the sale, saying there was no potential the Israel Defense Forces would misuse the weapons.

The cable did not mention the Biden administration’s public concerns over the growing civilian casualties, nor did it address well-documented reports that Israel had dropped 2,000-pound bombs on crowded areas of Gaza weeks earlier, collapsing apartment buildings and killing hundreds of Palestinians, many of whom were children. Lew was aware of the issues. Officials say his own staff had repeatedly highlighted attacks where large numbers of civilians died. Homes of the embassy’s own Palestinian employees had been targeted by Israeli airstrikes.

Still, Lew and his senior leadership argued that Israel could be trusted with this new shipment of bombs, known as GBU-39s, which are smaller and more precise. Israel’s air force, they asserted, had a “decades-long proven track record” of avoiding killing civilians when using the American-made bomb and had “demonstrated an ability and willingness to employ it in [a] manner that minimizes collateral damage.”

While that request was pending, the Israelis proved those assertions wrong. In the months that followed, the Israeli military repeatedly dropped GBU-39s it already possessed on shelters and refugee camps that it said were being occupied by Hamas soldiers, killing scores of Palestinians. Then, in early August, the IDF bombed a school and mosque where civilians were sheltering. At least 93 died. Children’s bodies were so mutilated their parents had trouble identifying them.

Weapons analysts identified shrapnel from GBU-39 bombs among the rubble.

On Antony “The Butcher” Blinken:

In the months before and since, an array of State Department officials urged that Israel be completely or partially cut off from weapons sales under laws that prohibit arming countries with a pattern or clear risk of violations. Top State Department political appointees repeatedly rejected those appeals. Government experts have for years unsuccessfully tried to withhold or place conditions on arms sales to Israel because of credible allegations that the country had violated Palestinians’ human rights using American-made weapons.

On Jan. 31, the day after the embassy delivered its assessment, Secretary of State Antony Blinken hosted an agency-wide town hall at an auditorium at the State Department headquarters where he fielded pointed questions from his subordinates about Gaza. He said the suffering of civilians was “absolutely gut wrenching and heartbreaking,” according to a transcript of the meeting.

“But it is a question of making judgments,” Blinken said of his agency’s efforts to minimize harm. “We started with the premise on October 7 that Israel had the right to defend itself, and more than the right to defend itself, the right to try to ensure that October 7 would never happen again.”

The embassy’s endorsement and Blinken’s statements reflect what many at the State Department have understood to be their mission for nearly a year. As one former official who served at the embassy put it, the unwritten policy was to “protect Israel from scrutiny” and facilitate the arms flow no matter how many human rights abuses are reported. “We can’t admit that’s a problem,” this former official said.

[…]

Last week, ProPublica detailed how the government’s two foremost authorities on humanitarian assistance — the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department’s refugees bureau — concluded in the spring that Israel had deliberately blocked deliveries of food and medicine into Gaza and that weapons sales should be halted. But Blinken rejected those findings as well and, weeks later, told Congress that the State Department had concluded that Israel was not blocking aid.

The episodes uncovered by ProPublica, which have not been previously detailed, offer an inside look at how and why the highest ranking policymakers in the U.S. government have continued to approve sales of American weapons to Israel in the face of a mounting civilian death toll and evidence of almost daily human rights abuses. This article draws from a trove of internal cables, email threads, memos, meeting minutes and other State Department records, as well as interviews with current and former officials throughout the agency, most of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

[…] after an additional round of Cabinet meetings, this time helmed by both Blinken and Biden, an outline of the decision was publicly announced by Prime Minster’s Netanyahu’s office: “We will not allow humanitarian assistance in the form of food and medicines from our territory to the Gaza Strip” and, in a separate Hebrew version, “In light of President Biden’s demand, Israel will not thwart humanitarian supplies from Egypt as long as it is only food, water and medicine for the civilian population located in the southern Gaza Strip or moving there, and as long as these supplies do not reach Hamas. Any supplies that reach Hamas will be thwarted.” The Hebrew word לסכל, “to thwart,” is frequently used by Israel to describe targeted killings and assassinations. The previous policy of “thwarting” all humanitarian supplies from entering Gaza was conveyed to Egypt as an explicit threat to “bomb” aid trucks.

The substance of the Blinken-approved policy was starkly conveyed by Security Cabinet member Bezalel Smotrich, who later told the Israeli media: “We in the cabinet were promised at the outset that there would be monitoring, and that aid trucks hijacked by Hamas and its organizations [sic] would be bombed from the air, and the aid would be halted.”

State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel told Drop Site News: “The suggestion that anyone at the State Department signed off in any way on attacks on humanitarian workers or convoys is absurd. We have always been clear, including in the immediate aftermath of October 7, that Israel has the right to strike Hamas militants. Secretary Blinken has been equally clear that Israel needs to ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered to Gaza and that humanitarian workers inside Gaza are protected.” The State Department did not clarify whether it approved carrying out airstrikes against Hamas militants (or those indiscriminately classified as militants) who secure aid convoys or seize their contents. IDF officer: “This destruction was a cause of our tank’s attack.

Interviewer: “Fired on them?

IDF officer: “Yeah, yeah, because they [i.e. Hamas fighters and hostages] were blocked in these houses and we needed to conquer back the whole settlement. And it couldn’t happen without tanks.”

Female interviewer: “So how many were here and how many survived? How many did you…”

IDF officer: “No one survived from this house. […] From this house, 19 people died.”

For more than a year, the Jewish prisoners of Birkenau, the largest extermination camp in the Auschwitz industrial murder complex, meticulously prepared for an uprising against their Nazi oppressors.

Their revolt, the only to ever take place at Auschwitz, would become a footnote in the vast history of World War 2 and the Nazi genocide in Europe, but today it holds an uncanny historical parallel.

They gathered materials, improvised weapons, and smuggled and stored explosives. Against all odds, they planned to cut the death camp’s power supply, cutting communications among the SS officers and disabling the electric fence, and then to break through it and lead an escape.

The attack would be initiated by 200 men of the Sonderkommando “special work unit”, Jewish slaves who were forced by Nazis to escort other Jews arriving on trains, undress them, walk them to the gas chambers, and after their murders, shave hair from their corpses, remove gold teeth and crematoria, burn their bodies in crematoria, grind their bones to dust, and then scatter the ashes to cover up the crime. The Sonderkommando were forced to partake in the extermination of their own people, strangers and loved ones alike.

“I have wanted to live through it to take a revenge for the death of my father, my mother, my beloved sister Nella,” a Greek Jew working at Birkenau’s Crematorium II wrote in a letter discovered decades later.

Four women had smuggled small amounts of gunpowder from the explosives factory they worked in and delivered it to the Sonderkommando, which they planned to use to destroy the crematoria.

The revolt had been delayed by months, but as the gassing at Birkenau came to an end, the Sonderkommando understood that they were slated to be murdered.

On October 7, 1944, the moment arrived.

The camp’s SS ordered the senior Sonderkommando men at Crematorium IV to prepare lists for “evacuation” to another camp, which they suspected meant they would be killed.

One hour before the planned 2 p.m. attack, the SS Staff Sergeant began to announce roll call for the prisoners who would be “transported.” As the Sonderkommando ignored his orders and threats, a Jew named Chaim Neuhof stepped forward. As the SS man reached for his gun, Neuhof shouted the word “Hurrah” and struck the Nazi’s head with a hammer, collapsing him to the ground. The other prisoners began to attack SS troopers with stones, knives, iron poles, axes, picks and crowbars, wounding several more.

Amid the uprising, several Sonderkommando men rushed into Crematorium IV’s barracks and set the mattresses on fire. The smuggled explosives they had stashed in the walls ignited, burning the building down.

Some prisoners cut through the death camp’s fence and escaped into the surrounding forest after having killed three SS men and wounding several more.

The prisoners of Crematorium II saw the dark smoke from the flames of Crematorium IV billowing into the sky and launched their own attack. They threw Nazis into the ovens and killed two SS men, then they cut through the fence to the women’s camp. They all escaped, making their way to the Polish village of Rajsko, where they hid in a granary.

It didn’t take long for the SS to locate the escaped prisoners. The Nazis set fire to the granary, killing everyone inside. Those who escaped from Crematorium IV into the nearby forest fought until they were overcome. Some 250 Jews, including the Sonderkommando resistance leadership, were killed in the uprising.

An SS investigation discovered the names of the four women who had smuggled the explosives: Regina Safirsztajn, Estera Wajcblum, Ala Gertner, and Róża Robota. The women were tortured for weeks and hanged in front of Birkenau’s prisoners. As the Nazis placed a noose around Robota’s neck, she erupted with a final cry of defiance: “Sisters, revenge!”

Exactly 79 years later, the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, often referred to as an open-air concentration camp, carried out their own uprising against their oppressors.

Santa Ono: “The government could call me tomorrow and say, in a very unbalanced way, the university is not doing enough to combat antisemitism. And I could say it’s not doing enough to combat Islamophobia, and that’s not what they wanna hear. So the whole situation is not balanced.

There are powerful groups. You may know that my peers from presidents of other universities have been in the hot seat in Congress. The question from Congress is not balanced. It’s focussed almost entirely on antisemitism, which I think is an issue. But there’s also Islamophobia as well.

And so you can see they’re a very powerful group who are not shy to say that they will hold the whole institution accountable for not addressing antisemitism. To have the government say something like ‘We will withhold your $2 billion in funding if you don’t address antisemitism.’
